SID has been designed as a distributed and customizable package to allow anyone to serve taxonomic images for any organism of interest. The complete package with full installation instructions can be downloaded from here.
SID is still in development and minor updates will be released periodically. If you wish to be kept informed of these updates please register your use of SID here. Comments are also welcome and can be addressed to Simon Rycroft or Vince Smith.
SID validates the taxonomy used within the database using the web service feature of Rod Page's "Glasgow Taxonomic Name Server". Use of this facility assumes that the taxonomy of the organisms submitted to SID is known by this server. This is not a problem for many common organisms (e.g. mammals and birds) but for the more obscure organisms (i.e. virtually everything else) you may be required to submit the classification of the organisms to Rod Page beforehand. In either event, SID may require some minor tinkering before name validation will work correctly. We suggest that you contact Simon Rycroft, Vince Smith or Rod Page prior to installing your version of SID to ensure that name validation will function properly.
